Survive and thrive in the squeeze for small business - 12/10/08

Forget Darwin, it’s a question of your small business surviving the credit crunch with all your bits intact.

David Parker Managing Director of purpleaccounts.com sheds light on ways for small businesses to save money and get ahead.

“Sounds obvious but ‘cash is king’ and controlling the flow of cash through the business is critical. In particular:

  1. Debtor control. By reviewing your control methods now, you can pump cash into your business without even trying. Be clear and consistent with your customers.
  2. Stock control. It’s all about control. Too much cash tied up in stock can stifle a healthy cash flow, leaving little room for manoeuvre should even harder hitting times develop.
  3. Bad debts and their management. The key tip here is to avoid them in the first place. Whilst the majority of us don’t actually look for this to happen, poor control can lead to an increase in bad debt, draining your resources, time and energy. By credit checking new customers where appropriate, this can decrease the risk and provide some reassurance that you will get the cash in.
  4. Invoicing. Does your invoicing system get the money coming in when YOU want it to? If not, it could make a big difference to your cash flow. Simply making sure that all of your customers are aware of your payment terms is useful. Don't let them use YOUR money to fund THEIR business.
  5. Marketing. Helen Parker MCIM also David’s co Director and wife offers her advice to small business owners. “Don’t stop marketing, just get more savvy. Text and email marketing, news releases (remember it must be newsworthy), recommendation and loyalty schemes, the list goes on and of course your existing customers. They are easier and cheaper to sell to!

It’s all down to processes, effective management and control. Sounds easy, but many business owners feel they don’t have the time to review all these processes and therefore continue to do ‘what they have always done’. Unfortunately, this does not bode well for maintaining a competitive edge and by taking steps NOW to avoid these pitfalls, it could even work to your advantage and put you one step ahead of everyone else!

Most of all, DON’T wait until it’s too late. DO it now, not at your financial year end, by then it could be too late, you'll be kicking yourself if you don't take decisive action now to avoid becoming another victim of the credit crunch.

You can get in touch with Purple by calling 0800 612 8988 or email enquiries@purpleaccounts.com.

Get one step ahead NOW, before someone else gets ahead of YOU.

Purple wins 'best new business - 16/06/08

Purpleaccounts.com has been awarded 'best new business 2008' by 'thebestof' members.

PURPLE Accounts has been voted ‘Best New Business 2008’ by the Isle of Man community. Awarded by ‘The Best of the Isle of Man’, the title has been given to Purple for achieving the highest number of public votes in a recent online poll to find the Best Business 2008.

Managing Director David Parker was delighted with the announcement: “I am genuinely touched in gaining the support of the Isle of Man community in helping us to win the Best Business 2008 award. I would like to thank everyone who voted for Purple. Since setting up operations from our home, Purple quickly built its client base simply by providing clients with what they want, excellent customer service, exceptional value for money and free advice. Now operating from offices in the centre of Douglas, we have been able to expand our service offering through the Small Business Centre on Victoria Street, showing a real commitment to the small business community on the Isle of Man. The Business Centre has been set up to provide a one stop shop for the needs of the small business, including office facilities which can be hired on an hourly basis.”

The Best of The Isle Of Man’s Lynne Gumbleton commented: “We would like to congratulate Purple for not only winning the award but for recognising the specific needs of the small business community. They are a true community minded organisation committed to seeing small businesses thrive. Well done Purple. May it be the first of many awards.”
